ABBY'S STORY

I received mat and comprehensive Pilates certifications from Balanced Pilates in Manhattan, and came into the fitness industry with a background in opera and musical theater. I did not grow up as an athlete or professionally trained dancer, which gave me a unique challenge learning the Pilates repertoire. Not only was I learning how to teach the moves, I was learning how to do them for the first time, with a body that was not extra flexible, stable, or conditioned. If you are coming to Pilates having NEVER experienced movement in this way, that is awesome, because I am familiar with that journey. Pilates is great for all bodies at all stages and walks of life, and I want to be there to guide you through it.

IT HASN'T BEEN EASY...

But it has always been worth it. I've spent my life training to be a working musician and actress. I worked as a voice teacher through undergrad and grad school to put myself through college and eventually burned out from submerging myself too deeply into one focus. I loved teaching and connecting with others through learning, but didn't know what else I could teach outside of music. My fitness career started when I moved to NYC and began branching out into the local theater community. My best friend asked me to be a practice body for her Pilates teacher training certification, and in that hour, I fell in love with Pilates and knew without a doubt there was a way I could bring this movement practice not only to fellow musicians, but to all people who were looking to live a stronger and more mobile life.

For the past 3 years Abby has been my Pilates reformer instructor, and currently my virtual Pilates mat instructor during Covid-19. She is knowledgable about how the body is structured and how it should correctly move. She quickly spots and corrects misalignments to help you get the most out of each rep. She knows how to tweak each exercise with a slight variation so you are always breaking plateaus by never doing the same thing twice. She is a great coach who can cheer you on through a grueling routine, and point out how you’ve improved.”

“Abby is amazing. Her bubbly contagious energy makes class fun, and more importantly, she is super conscious of her students keeping their bodies safe. She always meets you where you are. I took her classes following both of my pregnancies (and in between them), and found them so so helpful for rebuilding strength. I also became more aware of my posture, alignment, and different muscle groups. If I could, I would take a class with Abby every day of the week!.”

“Abby is both professional and lovely to work with. She always changes the workout so I’m not bored, and carefully watches my form. She’s really creative in coming up with compensatory strategies in order to protect any aches and pains I may have that day, while continuing to work muscle groups. She’s super encouraging and challenging at the same time. Abby is never biting or in a bad mood. If you’re looking for that “sweet spot” in a coach/ teacher, she’s It. I highly recommend her.”

“In November 2019, I had an anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) surgical procedure. With the permission of my surgeon, I began practicing Pilates in March of 2020 with Abby as my trainer while I was still wearing a cervical collar. Recently, I went for a six-month post-op checkup, and the surgeon declared, “You’re fully healed. If you wanted, you could play in the NFL.” I’m 61 years old, so that will not be happening, however, I feel I look a lot younger because of Abby. She expertly avoided having me do anything inappropriate that would lead to further injury. After the cervical collar came off, we’ve been having daily one-hour sessions that have helped me transform my body. Abby’s knowledge and skill is the best. She tailors every session to what I need to develop my core strength and flexibility. The pain in my hip from arthritis? Gone. Abby’s personality and care are megawatt. The hour flies by and I always feel great afterwards Abby gave me a new lease on life. she has my highest endorsement and recommendation.

Abby is kind, nurturing, and supportive both in person and virtually. Her classes are structured so that I am working hard and building strength, but I feel safe doing the exercises and variations she provides. She talks you through each exercise but keeps class moving at a good pace. She is prepared for hard work. Her empathetic personality allows her to take care of clients with injuries and progress them to full strength in a safe manner. I cannot recommend her classes enough!

Abby is a terrific instructor. Her classes are accessible to any level. Always safely challenging for those who want that, or inclusive of wherever you are at in your body that day. I regularly take her classes and appreciate her joyful, down-to-earth presence, her genuine desire to impart all she can and her commitment to varying things, keeping our bodies and minds engaged in new ways. Highly recommend.

“I spent a lifetime being fit, but hit a brick wall with a reconstructed left knee and rotator cuff injury. I knew something had to change as 'just-work-out' had reached its logical midlife limits and crossfit was not being too kind to the joints. I asked Abby to focus on shoulders and knees to compliment my strength days, but we've now gone so much further; having discovered muscles I never isolated before (obliques, glutes, etc.). A year later I bang out unassisted Cossacks with ease and hit new PRs on squats and compound olympic lifts, not to mention perform supermans, hollows and L-sits with confidence. Most amazingly, my goal to become a legit intermediate surfer and skier has been realized... at the age of 53. What else can I say?"
